Waves
When everyone’s gone,
Asleep,
Or forgotten,
What’s left?
Not the monster you had under your bed when you were a child,
Or the dollar you lost last week,
But the waves
Oh, the waves
The waves will always crash,
Taking whatever he can get as he pulls back in
Stealing the beautiful seashells at 6 o’clock in the morning
Before anyone gets to see their beauty
Engulfing the trash left by that party last week
Before anyone got the chance to clean it up
Eating up the scraps of food left by those tourists
Before the seagulls got their morning meal
But the sand
Oh, the sand
Making your feet warm on a hot day at the water
Being so kind to allow you to put your big and obnoxious umbrella in her
Hiding her seashells deep under so the waves cannot take it
Compromise.
The waves staying within the shoreline,
Giving the sand her privacy
The waves always stay.
