"Anyways, I was thinkin' today, it's kinda all about the memories you make." Kelsea Ballerini

As my family and I boarded the plane to Kauai in December of '24, I was in a whir of excitement. As the plane started to circle the island, I couldn't help but stare out the window, being pulled in by the bright blue ocean, lush green mountains, and long stretches of beach below. As we stepped off the plane, the warm, mildly humid tropical air felt like a warm welcome. Even though it was December, everyone was. wearing light summer clothes, and the people we encountered was easygoing and kind-whether they were helping us find food or recommending places to explore. We spent the majority of our days visiting beaches like Poipu, Hideaway Beach and Hanalei, where the water was so clear blue that we could see colorful fish swimming all around us. We even spotted sea turtles drifting near the shore. At Poipu, they would even nap on the shore! As we snorkeled off the beach of Poipu, the colorful fish and sea turtles swam around us like the curious little critters they are. What a blast that was! Old Koloa Town was another favorite stop, full of small shops and historic charm that made wandering through it feel not only relaxing and fun, but intriguing. There was music playing everywhere, it was fun seeing the different vibes put out by each shop. Everywhere we went, the island looked like a postcard, with lush mountains, palm trees, bright flowers, and calm, blue water. The food was amazing too: fresh, vibrant, and full of tropical flavors. After ten days, getting back on the plane felt bittersweet. Kauai had been even more beautiful and welcoming than I expected. So, as the island disappeared beneath the clouds, I already wanted to return someday.

The author's comments:

I am an 18 year old senior in high school. I'm the second oldest of five girls, yes all girls and no boys. I currently have a dog, a small Schnauzer mix named JoJo who is ~14 years old. I have been working with animals since I was 12 years old, starting out as a volunteer at a rescue ranch to now being employed at a veterinary clinic for horses as a cleaner. Outside of school and working, I spend my time usually reading or hanging out with friends and family. I have dreamed to become an author as a side gig, as I aspire to become a licensed veterinary technician. Being an author and technician have been two big dreams in my life.

My family and I had traveled to Kauai, Hawaii in December of 2024 and instantly made me fall in love with the island. I had never thought about writing about my experience there until I had a teacher encourage me to do so. As I reminisced by looking through photos, ideas for this piece came to life. Enjoy!
