Confessions of a High School Freshman
I want you, my reader to let me borrow your mind for a second. Imagine that you were forced to do a job, be a slave really, you rights were trampled and cut back at every turn, forced to arrive at a job you did not choose, forced to arrive at an ungodly hour, forced to pay them, instead of them paying you. Now imagine you worked at this place from your fifth birthday until you were eighteen and a half. Can you imagine a place like this would exist in the western, civilized world? It does exist, and your tax dollars even fund it.
You can have your mind back now, but I want to see if you can tell me what this place is? Any guesses? if you guessed school, you would be right! I have chosen to go public about the atrocities I have observed as a highschool freshman, and today I am doing just that. Let me begin with the story I find scariest, where the life of a student student was risked by staff.
Involved School Staff: Ms. A(redacted) Students Involved: A(redacted), R(redacted), K(redacted), M(redacted), B(redacted) External Parties Involved: (redacted), Ms. D(redacted) Date of Event: (redacted) April 2014
Event Timeline:
10:15- During work on their teams rocket, A. noticed that K. was not feeling well and was complaining of abdominal discomfort.
10:45- During the school's morning break A. noticed K. sitting in front of her locker grabbing her knees in pain. A. being a Boy Scout trained in First Aid as well as a person with deep interest in the medical field who had done research on his own into medicine immediately dropped to the floor and began asking what was wrong so he could help. K. responded that she was experiencing extreme stomach pain. A. did as he had been trained and palpated her abdomen, and recognized she was exhibiting Aaron’s Sign, Markle Sign, and Rovsing’s Sign, three clinical signs of acute appendicitis. A. immediately notified staff and said that they needed to call for immediate emergency transport. The staff took her into the office and took her temperature and she was returned to her advisory by the end of the break. He again tells staff to call 911. A. told her friends to watch her (he did not have a cell phone and was prohibited from calling 911 even if he had) and if anything changes that they should come and get him immediately.
11:50- Lunch time. A. talks to K. and her then boyfriend B.. K. and A. decided that they would follow plan and go to (redacted) Artisan Center for their (redacted) Project. A. and K. made this decision knowing that the (redacted) Artisan Center would be required to call 911.
12:35 PM A., K., and K. and A.’s friend and team mates R. and M. departed to the (redacted) Artisan Center providing K. with walking support.
12:40 PM K. falls for the first time is caught by A. and R. they ease her to the ground and wait while she catches her breath.
12:45 PM K. falls for the second time and loses consciousness for a few seconds. A. and M. offer to carry her the rest of the way and A. says to R. that if K. falls again he is using her phone to call 911.
12:50 PM K., A., R., and M. arrive at the (redacted) Artisan Center and A. fills D., a staff member at the (redacted) Artisan Center on what was going on. They call K.’s parents and they do not respond. They continue to attempt to contact her parents and the (redacted) Artisan Center Staff state that if they do not arrive in ten minutes they are calling 911
1:05 PM (redacted) Artisan Center calls 911 and A. gives paramedics all the information he knew.
1:25 PM Ambulance takes K. to St. (redacted) Hospital.
The Teachers repeatedly failed to act in K’s best interest and A. was sarcastically scolded when he arrived back at school at the end of the day. It was eventually discovered by doctors that K. was suffering from food poisoning. However, this does not excuse the fact that she was experiencing what appeared to be appendicitis, and she may be dead now had she actually been having an appendicitis attack because the staff failed to call for emergency transport.
This is one story of wrong doing at the hands of the teachers at my school, I am hoping to post a new one every few weeks until I run out of topics.
