Joey's Story
Max and Joey were on their way home from hiking in the mountains. They would have stayed out longer but there was a thunderstorm approaching from the north. The wind was blowing 30 mph and the thunder started roaring loud. A strike of lightning hit and it hadn't been long before their car swerved off the road into a tree.
"Don't leave me here, please," whimpered Joey as his boyfriend Max was trying to get out of the driver’s seat to go find someone or something that could help.
"I'll hurry back as soon as I can, babe" whispered Max as he wandered off into the darkness.
Joey was lying there in the passenger side of the car unable to move, but he could speak. He was still waiting, hoping for Max's return. Suddenly Joey saw flashing lights from a police car and heard very loud sirens. Then two firefighters and an ambulance arrived, helping Joey out of the car onto the stretcher.
Joey whimpered once more, "Max! Max, where are you! You promised you'd be back soon.”
The two firemen looked at each other and let out heavy sighs. Then they nodded over at the policeman.
The policeman said quietly, "I am extremely sorry to tell you this but we recently found a young man about a mile from here lying on the side of the road.”
He paused for a moment, almost as if he was trying not to cry. "He never even made it off the roadside..."
