A Possible Future with Artificial Intelligence
I was watching Wall-E in my room. People sitting there and being by robots, everything was running automatically. The light in my eyes reflected a possible future, AI controlling everything, and people being free from work. Before this scene applies to reality, there are some challenges that we must face and overcome…
Every single new phase of technical development brings more than itself. Back in ancient times, life changed a lot when tools appeared. People hunt easier and increase the chance to survive. The media talks about this history frequently. Shift to the industrial revolution, where U.S. History class talking about spinning jenny replaced workers with higher efficiency. These events lead to improvement of living conditions and environment; however, issues also existed with changes, where I was taught a lot of time by my teacher. People lose their jobs while the difference of wealth dramatically increases. Across the timeline of history, the same result showed again and again, including today, which is the reason I am involved in this issue.
In late 2022 , OpenAI published a closed-source large language model, ChatGPT 3.5. Although it was not very successful to act like a real person, it shocked most people who used it later. News started being published to indicate how important it could be. As a member who joined 2023, it was the first time I felt general artificial intelligence was coming, an AI with self-consciousness. I was shocked when the screen printed out word by word. “Woow~” my sound fills my room quickly and loudly. Later on, more models were inspired by ChatGPT, such as Gemini and DeepSeek. These models give me more surprises, which also helped me learn to use them quickly with skill and better prompt. Meanwhile, other forms of artificial intelligence also appear in our view. When I saw an image appear from nothing but a sentence, I felt a flood of thoughts rushing through my mind. That's when I realized a question: What if…artificial intelligence becomes "smart" enough to replace us? It is a common theme we might see in a movie about the future, but it was more closed at that time.
The idea was given up soon since the performance of models was terrible. In my experience of using artificial intelligence, with ChatGPT 3.5, it was helpful but not that helpful. For instance, I tried to use ChatGPT 3.5 to generate code to build a simple sample application. It does not approach the goal even a little, with a lot of prompts. It does become helpful when I ask for solving complex mathematical problems, which is the "only" time I would feel bad for teachers. TIme moving faster than we thought, ChatGPT 4 and more powerful models were released. Meanwhile, models started to provide a feature to “think”, think was a capability that is only owned by us, how come? Around this time, I learned the principle of this large language model, the text to text model, it’s just calculating the words and relationship to respond! Does this count as a little win? I do not know, to be honest, I was a little happy about it.
Starting at this time, AI became a part of everyone’s life. We ask questions with it, we search with it, we learn from it, and we with it everywhere. I learned this since even my mom knows it and uses it. For example, AI has already been integrated in applications, some of which are able to control your phone or computer to finish a task. In 2025, I saw an example with ChatGPT, it can help a user to purchase something from amazon, and pay for you if you provide a payment. All of the events finally became another question similar to one that I had before, a question related to majorities of society. How far would AI go, and where is our space?
The answer came late until I saw a video made by a Chinese company named MediaStorm. In the video, “If AI can replace me, then what is my purpose?”(Translated), they introduced a challenge of a group of people who play music together, it contains a heavy topic about disease. As a result, they wanted to make a video surprise for the group. At that time, AI was not powerful; however, the surprise took too long, where AI became more intelligent, enough to generate a video with prompt and similar quality. This leads to a question, should they use a video generated by AI with less cost, or a video made by themselves but cost more under the similar quality? This question confused them so much.
“If I am the person making the decision, I would use AI” I thought calmly.
“All about cost, right?” I questioned myself.
No, the answer is more complex than I thought.
“If AI becomes more powerful than ourselves, it can help us make music, make videos, and be able to replace us, then what remains to us…" the host said, “maybe the experience”.
“The experience shaped us, giving us a unique soul,” the host added, “When you saw white hair [on your mom’s head, you would not stop thinking… your experience with other lead to what you and others look like]”
Finally it became an idea: If they use AI, what is the meaning of video?...Even though AI is cheap and gives results quickly, the video became a surprise because it is made by humans. The video is and should be filled with emotions and feelings, which provided a reason why it existed. This video gave me a lot of thoughts. It also gave that answer for the question, things become meaningful when it contains our idea, our feeling, and our hope. No matter what it looks like in the future, there will be a space that only belongs to us. We are a little piece of the universe, but we are unique to ourselves.
