Chris Rick Avery or also known as C.R. Avery is a 16 year old kid in High School. He is very easygoing and the most popular kid in school. He was a 5-star athlete in football. He had so much promise until the state final game when it took a turn for the worst. He tore his ACL and was devastated. The doctors told him he would never recover and be back at loo% like he was before. All his scholarships for football taken away. He shut down. The most popular kid in school now the least popular after shutting everyone out that use to be his friends.
After shutting down after tearing his ACL, he was determined to make a comeback stronger than ever before and prove the doctor wrong. In his life he had one main role model. That role model was Adrian Peterson, a running back for the Minnesota Vikings. He saw Adrian Peterson tear his ACL and had a record breaking year the next year and his ACL would not stop him from coming back stronger than he used to be. Next year was his senior year. He was cleared to play, but coach didn’t want to risk him playing football and damaging his ACL even more than it already was. Coach didn’t play him all season even though he was cleared and ready to play. After that year he thought he could go to a school and walk on. He decided to walk on at Michigan and redshirt his freshman year. He started all year at quarterback and brought them to the Rose Bowl. They ended up winning the Rose Bowl, but during the game his knee started to hurt, but he still played through it. The next week he went to the doctors and put him on crutches. The next week it started feeling worse so he went back to the doctors again and the doctors told him that one of his only decisions was to amputate his leg.
The doctor said, “This is the only choice you have if you wish to live.”
C.R. crying said, “Isn’t there any other alternatives?”
“There is one other thing, but does not ensure you live.” The doctor explained.
“What is it? I’ll do anything.” C.R. said frightened.
“We could take out your ACl, but it would not be a speedy recovery if you did manage to survive it.”
“And if I do manage to survive, but it doesn’t work?” C.R. said fearing for his life.
“We would have to amputate your leg and hope you do not die from bleeding out.”
C.R. Avery afraid for his life, crying, said, “Please help me live. I will do anything!”
The doctor walked away as he said, “I’ll let you think about what your decision will be. I’ll come back in a little bit.”
The doctor came back an hour later and he looked like he was dead. Very frightened the doctor said, “Oh no what have I done! I didn’t know how to handle this situation,”
Was this actually reality or was it just a fantasy? His mom walked in and said, “My little boy C.R. is he actually dead?”
The doctor said, “Looks like it.”
The doctor and nobody else took his pulse or felt his heartbeat. After his mom saw him there she set up a funeral a week later. Everyone of his peers, friends and family were mourning over the death of C.R. Avery. All of his former football coaches spoke at his funeral about him and what a great kid and football star. After his last coach spoke his family went up and had an hour long speech about him and what a great kid he was and how hard it was to wrap his head around why he would take his own life because he had everything going in the right way other than his ACL which was very unfortunate. They knew a big factor was because he didn’t really have a choice other than amputating his leg and he couldn’t imagine life without it and even if they did it didn’t ensure he’d live. The main question was, how? How did he kill himself? Did he even kill himself? No one, especially his mom and doctor had any idea of how he killed himself in that room. There no weapons and no one else was in the room. Also he didn’t have any scratches, holes or marks on his body. They couldn’t put two and two together of why he would take his life. They were confused, so they opened up the coffin and inside was nothing! No body, no ashes nothing. They didn’t know how this was possible. They were for sure he was dead, but they didn’t even take his pulse, so how could they know if he was dead. Was this reality? Or was everyone dreaming? People must have not seen him get out of the coffin or he was never in it to begin with. It was a houdini act pulled of by this freshmen in college. They didn’t know where he was and didn’t know where to look for him.
After the funeral was over and his family went home he was there sitting at the dining room table eating a piece of pizza. He was sitting there with a new leg. He must have gone to the doctors and got it amputated and survived. His family was shocked that they all broke out in tears. They had no idea how. They all said, “How are you alive? We were sure that you were dead.”
“Did you check my pulse or heartbeat?”
“No, but why would you fake your death?”
“To be completely honest I have no clue. I just didn’t want to have to get my leg amputated, but now that it’s gone it’s not that bad. I thought it would be a lot worse and a lot more painful, but now i’m glad that I did it.” C.R. explained
“Well i’m very relieved that you’re not dead.” she said as she wiped hear tears away
4 years later C.R. finished college. Winning the heisman twice, winning 3 national championships and got drafter #1 overall to the Cleveland Browns. He brought them to 3 Superbowls and won 2 of them. Even Though C.R. didn’t have a leg he had his prosthetic leg and still succeeded and showed great courage.
