Cancer
The sky was gloomy, streets wet from the thunderstorm last night. 5:15 a.m.
“Sh*t, sh*t sh*t sh*t.” was all Tyler could say. He was late. Today would be his 6th time in less than two weeks. His mother would kill him if she found out. He had to be at school by 5:00 am, it took him 20 minutes to get to school with his car. He drove a Range Rover, he absolutely loved that car. By the time he got out of his house and into his car it was already 5:40 am. By the time he would get to school it would already be second period.
“The writing quiz will be on thurs-” before Mr. Avery could finish his sentence Tyler walked in. “Ahh Mr. Joseph glad to see you finally arrived! Um okay well sit down and i’d like to talk to you after class.”
“O-okay” i said. Ugh great, Tyler thought as he walked to the back row to take his seat. As he was walking he noticed someone sitting at his seat. “Um excuse me, but i-i think you’re sitting in my seat.” I said trying my hardest not to seem annoyed.
“Oh i’m so sorry, ya see i’m new and Mr. Avery said to pick any seat and well..haha.” said the new kid.
“Yeah no it’s fine just..can you uh-can you just get out of my seat please.” i said. I guess that came out harsher than i expected it to because the next thing i knew the kid was out of my seat. I should go talk to him, just to make sure he’s okay Tyler thought as he was getting out his notebook. Before he knew it the bell rang.
Tyler was walking out the door ready to find the new kid when all of the sudden he heard his name. “Mr. Joseph” Yelled Mr. Avery.
“Oh yeah sorry Mr. Avery what did you want to talk about?” Asked Tyler nervously.
“Well Tyler this is the 6th time you’ve been late in less than two weeks, what’s going on? I mean is it that you’re going to bed late and not waking up on time? Or is it traffic because if so definitely leave your house earlier”
“Mr. Avery i will try to start coming to school earlier but right now i really have to go sorry bye!” i basically ran out of the classroom trying to find the new kid. Ugh one minute till class starts, i guess i’m not going to talk to the new kid now.
FINALLY LUNCH. My favorite time during school. I don’t have to be stuck in a class for an hour, and because i’m a senior i can go off campus for lunch. Tyler was walking to his when there he was. The new kid, Tyler had been looking for him all day to apologize for this morning.
“Hey!” Tyler yelled. But the new kid didn’t turn around. “HEY YOU WITH THE BLUE SHIRT!” Tyler yelled again, this time much louder. The new kid turned around.
“Um….yeah?” he asked confused.
“Hey um i’m tyler from 2nd period. I uh- i kicked you out of my seat haha” i asked rubbing the back of my neck with my right hand.
“Oh yeah i’m Xavier and um yeah sorry about that i didn’t think that seat was taken.” Xavier said.
“No, no it’s fine. So you’re new here right?” asked Tyler.
“Yeah i just moved here from LA last week”
“Oh cool! So how to do you like Oregon so far?”
“Um it’s really cold haha but um yeah i really like it so far.”
“That’s good!” Tyler said. There was a moment of silence until Tyler decided to speak again. “So i’m going out to eat, d-do you wanna come with me? Maybe we could get to know each other a bit more!” asked Tyler hesitantly.
“Oh i’d love to, but what about your friends? Wouldn’t you wanna hang with them instead of me?” Xavier asked shyly.
“Well i uh-i-i don’t have that many friends” Tyler mumbled. “But no it’s fine”
“K cool let me just get my jacket from my car.” Xavier said excitedly. After Xavier came back with his sweater they went to go eat. They decided on panda express because that was the closest and because Xavier wanted chinese food. Once they got there and ordered they started talking and getting to know each other. Tyler decided to invite Xavier to his house to chill and maybe watch a movie. Xavier agreed and thought it would be nice to make a friend considering he had none. Once it was end of the day tyler decided it would be best that as soon as he got home he would clean his room and take a shower so he would look nicer. Once Xavier got to Tylers place they picked frozen because Tyler had never seen that movie before. This is nice, Tyler thought. Once the movie Xavier thought it was time to go home considering it was almost 11:30 pm and he needed to get his homework done.
Tyler and Xavier ended up hanging out everyday after school and become really great friends, you could even call them best friends. Everything was great, they were both happy and both really cared for each other. A couple months past and Tyler and Xavier are halfway through their senior year. One night Tyler was doing his AP homework when he started to get a headache, it was small so he shook it off. But it started to grow, his head was pounding. He felt as if someone was hitting his head with rocks. It got so bad that he ended up taking two advil pm’s to help him sleep and hopefully take his pain away. After he took the pills he took a shower to help him relax more. Fortunately the pills worked and he went to sleep peacefully that night.
The next morning he woke up with the same pounding headache from the night before, it was so bad when he tried to get out of bed he got dizzy and had to lay down again. He decided it would be best to stay home since he couldn’t even get up. Tyler called his mom to tell her since she was already at work.
“Hey m-mom, i-i have a really bad headache a-and i can’t even get out of bed s-so i was just going to-” But before Tyler could even finish his sentence his mom interrupted.
“Well honey if it’s that bad i’ll come pick you up and take you to the doctor's, okay honey? How does that sound?” his mom asked sounding concerned.
“No mom it’s okay, it’s just a headache” Tyler replied, but his mom insisted. Tylers mom came in about an hour. She would have been there earlier but there was a lot of traffic. Once she was there she went up to Tyler's room to help him into her car. It took about twenty minutes to get to the hospital, luckily the lines weren’t long so they met with the doctor in about ten minutes. The doctor decided it would be best to get a head ct to make sure everything was fine. After the head ct they were sent into the waiting room for the results.
“Have you called Xavier?” Tyler's mom asked.
“Um no i don’t want to worry him, it’s probably nothing mom stop freaking out.” Tyler said sounding tired.
“Okay sorry hun.” His mom said with a smile on her face. Tyler was about to fall asleep when the doctor came out.
“Hello Mrs. Joseph, um i’m sorry to say...your son has a brain tumor. Unfortunately its pretty far grown. And he has about six months to a year to live. We can treat it with aggressive chemo and radiation therapy, but i am truly sorry.” Said the doctor with a sad look on his face. Tyler was in shock. He didn’t know how to react. He was just there, standing watching his mother cry with a blank face.
“Oh tyler honey, i-i-i’m so-” Tyler's mom finally choked out through the tears. But tyler didn’t react, he couldn’t, he just grabbed his mom and drove home.
“Are you going to call Xavier?” Tyler's mom said after a couple hours of being home.
“Um no. No i’m not.”
“Why not, you have to tell him he’s your best friend.”
“Mom i’m not telling him, i don’t want my last year to be full of sadness and sorrow or pity from my friends.” Tyler's mom bolted upstairs crying.
A couple months later tyler decides that he is going to go through the chemo therapy. And because he will eventually lose all his hair he thinks it would be best to tell Xavier now, before he starts.
“Hey Xavier i need you to come over like now please it’s an emergency” Tyler basically yelled at him through the phone.
“Um o-okay yeah okay i’m coming” Xavier hung up and ran out of his room into his car. Once Xavier was at Tyler's house he knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer.
“Hey Xavier um come in” Tyler said with a shaky voice.
“Yeah so um what’s wrong?” Xavier asked worriedly.
“So remember a couple months ago when i didn’t go to school because of that really bad headache?”
“Yeah, haha i was really lonely that day haha.”
“Well i went to the doctor's and they gave me a head ct. When we got it back we found out i had stage four brain tumor, a-and because it’s stage four, we can’t go anything about it. I have about 4 months now. I mean i can go through chemo and radiation therapy. And i decided to go through chemo therapy. I’m so sorry i didn’t you earlier. I just-i just didn’t know how to tell you.” Tyler was crying now.
“No, no no no this can’t be happening what the hell. Why, how could this happen?!” Xavier was crying now.
“Um i start the chemo on monday...so three days from now...a-and i was thinking maybe you can come with me.”
“YES, yes of course i will of course yes.”
“Okay great! Um do you want to watch a movie or something?”
“Yeah sure.” The rest of the night they were basically cuddling on tyler's couch watching jaws 3. Monday came faster than Tyler thought it would. Xavier and Tyler walked into the doctor's room.
“Hey tyler, um where’s your mother?” the doctor asked.
“Oh she’s at home. I uh heard this hurts and i don’t want her to see me in pain.”
“Okay that’s fine.” The doctor walked to the other side of the room. “So here’s how it’s gonna work.” The doctor started to explain everything to Tyler and Xavier. Once they were done with there first session Tyler was in so much pain. He had to do this twice every week.
After a couple weeks Tyler couldn’t take the pain anymore. He begged his mom to have him stop. He was tired. He was so, so tired. Of the chemo, of taking meds, of life. He thought being dead would be better than this. So, he quit taking chemo. He only had about 2 months now, what’s the point? One night around 2 am, Tyler wasn’t feeling good so he decided to wake his mom. She thought it would be best to take him to the hospital just in case something was wrong. As soon as they got there Tyler was admitted into a room.
“Xavier. Hi this is Tyler's mom. I-i i need you to come to the hospital please. We’re in room B307 on the fourth floor.” Xavier rushed out of his room not even changing out of his pajamas. He left a note for his parents just incase he wouldn’t be back by the time they woke up. Once he was on the fourth floor he found Tyler's mom and saw that she was crying. He knew why she had called him. No, no no no no. This can’t be happening. Not now. Not yet, he still had two months, he had time. He was starting to tear up. No, i mean he might not be...Tyler's mom is a very emotional person and she could be crying over anything, yeah okay don’t worry Xavier everything will be fine.
“Xavier….um honey we need to talk.” Tyler's mom was crying so hard you could barely understand her.
“Tyler's, something happened. Um i-i don’t know how to tell you this but um.”
“Hey shh it’s okay” Xavier went to hug tyler's mom.
“Tyler and i came here because he wasn’t feeling well. And about an hour ago.” She was crying more intensely now. “Tyler's heart couldn’t handle being off the chemo and he-he coded about an hour ago and they tried to resuscitate him but they couldn’t and…”
“Oh god. No, no no no this can’t be happening he had two months he had time.” Xavier sat down on the floor and put his knees to his chest crying. “He had time.”
About a week later was Tyler's funeral. It was small. Tyler never liked funerals so his mom wanted to make it small for him. Immediate family and Xavier. There were tears. Lots of them. Xavier was hurt the most. Yeah they only knew each other for a couple months but to him, to him it felt like eternity. Xavier stopped going to school. He didn’t care if he wouldn’t graduate. He didn’t care about anything anymore. He stopped sleeping. For almost a week now he hadn’t slept. Everytime he did he dreamed about Tyler, and that was the last thing he wanted to do. His mother finally convinced him to at least take a nap, that it wasn’t healthy to be staying up all the time or not eating. So she made him two sandwiches and put two advil pms in his drink so he would fall asleep easier.
Xavier fell asleep right away. And yes he had a dream about tyler, but this was different. It felt so real.
“Xavier.” Tyler yelled. “Xavier!”
“Ty? Is-is that really y-you?” Xavier asked happier than ever.
“Well sorta, You see you’re dreaming right now and um i don’t really know what to say. But i don’t have much time so...Hi haha.”
“I’ve missed you so much you don’t understand.” Xavier went running to hug him.
“I’ve missed you too! But look, i don’t really know how to say this except you need to stop. Stop grieving over me. I’m gone. There’s nothing you can do about it. Not eating or sleeping isn’t going to help anything so please, eat, sleep, for me.”
“Ty i-i” But before he could even finish his sentence he woke up.
“Xavier wake up you’re going to school. I want to see you graduate. I want to see you go to college and your own apartment. But you can’t do that if you don’t go to school. So get up. Get dressed. You’re leaving in an hour.” Xaviers mom practically yelled at him to get up.
“Okay, okay. I’m going. I’m done grieving. I just want to go back to normal.” And that’s what he did. He went back to school. He started to eat again, and sleep more. Before he knew he was graduating from high school. Yeah he missed Tyler. He thought about him everyday. But...when tyler came to his dream he felt like everything was better. He knew tyler was in a better place.
