Life as Half a Chicken
Life as Half a Chicken
With the body of a chicken and the head of a young girl I scurry around the chicken coop with the other chickens. I feel they do not like me, constantly running from me if I get even a centimeter too close. They shout at me daily as if I’m the one trying to abduct them. I don’t understand why they do this, I’m just like them...well partially. Every morning they fear one of them will be next, or that in the night I call my “alien friends to take them away from their families”. When in reality this is simply a farm, but they’re to stupid to know that.
Last year I drank a potion in a witchcraft store that turned me into half a chicken. To protect me from the outside world my mother brought me here to live the rest of my dishonorable life. As the seemingly endless days pass by I feel that I’m returning to my normal state. I begin to experience more sensation in the feathers of my wings which were previously my arms and fingers. Still day by day I eat this disgusting chicken food and pray that I’ll be human again.
The sound of footsteps are heard, the chickens begin to scream again and that's the start of a lovely day here at the farm. Scratch that it’s that start of the rest of the chickens harassing me for the ‘abduction’ of their friend.
“Ah ya hear that Jen, don’t you just love their atrocious screams in the morning” said Steven, the farmer, rolled his eyes in annoyance and continued scanning the coop for the right chicken to sell.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it Steve” I uttered as I walked over to him and ate from the bucket in his hand.
“Haha, How are you feeling today? Any better?” Every morning Steve would make note of my progress, so far each day has been better from the last.
“Amazing, I think I’ll be back to normal by the end of the week” I said, smiling widely.
“Good to hear- AH HA! You’re the one” Steven bent down and picked up Lilian. I received a disgusted look from her as Steven quickly left the coop.
As I turned to my nest, the clearly angered chickens had furious looks plastered on their faces.
“H-hey guys, is this a welcome party?” The anxiety was heavy in my chest, these birds are crazy!
“Oh yeah, this is a welcome party for all the harm you’ve caused our families” said Bridget as she cracked her hideous chicken head.
I ran out of the coop into the gated field that Steve set up so the chickens wouldn't run free.
“STOP HER!” Bridget yelled. Soon the chickens surrounded me and I was out of breath.
“Why can’t we just be friends, I haven’t done anything wrong. This is a farm, why can’t you guys understand that?” I said
Suddenly I began to feel a burning sensation within my bird chest. The sky became blurry and I fell over, my world became dark. Soon enough I felt myself come to and I was still surrounded by the chickens who were now just staring at me. I looked down at my body and screamed.
