The Letter That Came With A Broken Heart
Ana was the first person that Amy contacted when she got to the same school as Ana. Amy was delighted, thinking that they would spend more time together in high school. The two were best friends ever since Amy moved next door to Ana. Amy used to spend her early childhood days in Thailand and Ana was the person that befriended her. Ana was sweet and nice and she had her own circle of friends back. Even so, Ana always make sure that Amy was never lonely and Amy was very thankful to have her as her best friend.
Summer ended and it was time for school. The school's hall are full with parents who were sending their children away to boarding school for the first time. Most female students were crying and well, some male too. Amy excused herself from her parents to meet Ana. Amy was hoping that they got into the same sport house so that maybe they can stay in the same room, or at least in the same block. Amy was looking around the school's cafeteria when she saw a familiar figure waving at her with a bright smile. Ana was with her parents and Amy rushed to their table. Amy greeted her parents like how she usually does and asked Ana what sport house she got into. Unfortunately, Ana was in the green house meanwhile Amy was in the blue house. Ana reassured her that it was okay and they will always be friends, it didn't matter if they were not in the same house or even the same class.
A few months passed by and the two girls had adapted to the new environment. Ana had her own circle of friends and Amy also had found her new circle of friends but they still managed to find some time to spend with each other. Ana would go to Amy's room sometimes and they would talk until midnight. Amy was glad and she believed that their friendship was strong enough to keep them through the upcoming years of crappy high school.
The difference between Amy's new friends and Ana's new friend were the fact that Amy's friends were the popular type that always mingle with boys. Her group of friends were pretty among the male and also female population of the school. And with that Amy slowly started to change and Ana seems like distance away from her even though she only lived one block away from her.
One of the cons of getting into boarding school was you barely had any time to spend with your friends. Sometimes even with yourself. Ana joined the Research & Development Club and she had been busy ever since. She had practice almost everyday and the seniors saw her potential of going farther and maybe be the head of the club later when she become a senior. As practice became more frequent and intense the time she had to visit Amy had also lessened.
They still greet each other when they bumped into random places and Ana was usually the one who greeted Amy first.
Freshman year ended like nothing and sophomore year came in a blink of eye. Amy changed her hairstyle like how her friends recommended her and her thick framed black glasses were now gone. Her skirt also had hiked up a few inches then it usually was and boys looked at her everywhere she went. Her friends were proud of her change and Ana was too busy to realize the changes on her best friend.
They barely talked now and Amy would only gave away a simple wave whenever Amy dropped by her class to say hi. Ana found the atmosphere between them had became too awkward and Ana couldn't find a topic to talk about so she would just say goodbye and leave. Ana thought for a second that that Amy was not the Amy she used to know.
In one of the morning assembly, Ana received and award from the principle for her achievement in the recent R&D competition. Everyone was clapping for her and some even cheered. Ana's roommate, Lucy, who coincidentally sat next to Amy that morning saw that Amy didn't cheer for her best friend or even clap her hand for Ana and she had a stoic expression all the time. Lucy became curious because she had heard stories from Ana about her and Amy being best friend ever since they were in middle school.
"Hey Amy aren't you proud of your best friend?"
"Yeah, but she's not my best friend. We're not even friends."
Lucy wanted to ask more but she thought that maybe it would be better if she keep her mouth shut.
Later that evening, Lucy accidentally slipped about the conversation she had with Amy in the morning during tea time and she felt guilty about it. Ana only gave her a small smile and said that it was okay and thanked Lucy for being such an honest friend.
Amy and Ana stopped talking for the whole year and they didn't even greet each other anymore. Not even a simple wave. Not even a slightest smile.
It was time for senior year and Ana never returned. Amy tried not think why.
Spring break came rather quick for Amy that year and she went back home like how she usually did in the past years. There was an envelope with her name on it on her table and she asked her parents about it. Her parents told her that Ana's brother dropped by a few days ago to send the letter. She ripped the envelope open and started to read the contents slowly, observing each syllables like they worth all her time.
Amy,
You were actually the first person that I considered as my true best friend. Maybe I used to had some friends back then but you were different. You were something much more to me.
If you're wondering why I'm not at school for senior year it is because my family decided that it's better if I stay away from you because I actually had become depressed ever since you stopped talking to me. You must be thinking how pathetic I'm being right now, but it's okay because I think I am pathetic. And actually Lucy told me about how you didn't consider me as a friend anymore and it's okay.
And also just in case if you're wondering, I had forgiven you. I forgive you every night like how you used to teach me to forgive everyone at the end of the day. I forgive every single moment you turned me into a pathetic depressed girl.
And I hope you will not try to find me.
Sincerely,
Ana
It was too late. The moment Amy realized her mistake, it was too late.
