Yellow boots
In the little town of Inc, there was a little boy four maybe even five, he didn't really have much to his name, he had his nice suit that he wore on Sundays for church but, other than that he didn't have that much. He walked around town with the biggest smile on his face, like he didn't have a care in the world. This little boy knew that he had to live his life to the fullest. The one thing about this boy that stood out from the rest were these little yellow rain boots. These rain boots could brighten anyone's day, they were so yellow and clean.
On Western Street, the main road in Inc had everything you needed; it had the bakery, the fresh vegetable market stands, an ice cream parlor, the Barbour shop and the nicest clothes store. Everyday Jerry the baker, would sit in his shop and look out the window and at 1:13 sharp the little boy would walk down the street with his yellow rain boots on. This little boy would jump in the puddles that were on the street after it had just rained. No matter what type of day wether it was raining, the sun was shining or it was windy out this little boy would have a smile on his face.
"James" my mother called.
Hi my name is James Thomas McGee, I'm four years old, and on my fourth birthday I opened my one and only present. Inside this box were the brightest and yellowest boots I have ever seen!
One month after my fourth birthday Mama had grown ill, an sicknesses that could not be cured and Papa wasn't really around much. I was the only one there to take care of mama, I knew how sick she was because we didn't have much money, so we didn't live near town a mile or so away to be exact. You all are probably thinking "How does this little boy take care of his mother when he is only four?"
Well you are most certainly right, I am four years old so Ma didn't really want me to be worried about her and to have myself forgetting about growing up. She would make me go outside everyday and told me that she was able to take care of herself. I wasn't one to misbehave, I did as my mama told me, I went into town to find something fun to do. Everyday after lunch at around one o'clock sharp I would walk into the town and get there at about 1:12 p.m. As I walked down Western street on my right was the ice cream parlor and on the left was the Barbour shop. As I walked for another minute or so I would see Jerry. Jerry was the baker in the town of Inc, everyday when I would pass the bakery he would be inside watching me run through the puddles. Jerry seemed like a nice man, he always smiled at me when I would walk past or some times he would give me some freshly cooked bread.
Days have gone and passed and Ma is still sick she sits on the couch and barely eats. In the middle of the night you can here her whimper in pain because she didn't want to wake me up. Little did she know that every night I would stay up till she would fall asleep, and even then I was careful to not fall into a deep sleep. I was afraid Ma wouldn't wake up the next day. Although she was getting a little bit better she still had her bad days, when they were bad they we're de truly horrible. Ma would scream in pain and would get sick a lot. Pa still hasn't come around, I don't think he ever will come back. Honestly I am okay with it because he doesn't know what he is missing out on. Then there are days that I need my Pa here, days where I want to learn to hunt and fish or even extra help with Ma. I put on this act of a tough little guy like everything in my life is perfect and it's not, nothing right, this isn't suppose to be happening to me.
One morning I woke up to find Ma laying on the couch like she usually is except she was in so much pain and I didn't know what to do, so I ran into the kitchen and grab her medication. She has medication to control her back spasms. When I grabbed the medication I realized that it was full, there is no way it could be full because it was delivered to us over a month ago, I ran back into the room and gave it to her and told her she had to take it right away. After her sweating stopped and her breathing calmed down, I had to sit down with her and ask her why her medication bottle was full. When I asked her why her response was "James Thomas this is non of your business! If I don't want to take my meds then I don't have to. It's not doing anything for me, because it is make me more tired, and I never want to move or do anything." "But Ma it's only making it worse because you stopped taking them, your body's not use to the dosages of medication that you are given. You have to take it if you want to feel any better." I walked away not wanting to fight with my Ma anymore then I had already. I went to the bedroom and waited till one o'clock, when the clock struck one I went downstairs grabbed my yellow rain boots and started to walk towards town.
When I got to town I walked past the ice cream parlor and the Barbour shop but this time when I went past the bakery Jerry was already standing outside. "Hi Jerry, how are you today?" " Pretty good son. I have a question for you though. Why do you walk here all by yourself everyday without your Ma or Pa?" I looked down at my yellow boots and then back at Jerry and smiled. "Well Jerry, Ma and Pa are at home cooking me some supper, and I come here everyday just to get out of the house. I love the outdoors and I love going on adventures, they make me truly happy and I forget about everything that might be wrong with my life." "Oh well James, here's some bread for you, have a great day!" I said thanks and walked away. Once I got to the edge of Western Street I looked back down at my boots, then I remembered what I had said to Jerry. It was something about these boots that made me feel confident, truly happy and that everything in my entire life is total perfection. All of sudden when I looked up I saw the local doctor running to my house, I knew it was my house because no one else lives in that direction. My little rain boots and I took of in a sprit to see what was going on at my house.
When I got to my house I ran right inside to see that Ma had passed out on the couch, I saw her pill bottle upside down and the pills scattered everywhere. I can't believe she did this to me, she told me she would be safer with her medication. "She's an addict Bob, and she also has stage four cancer, at this rate she has about 31 days to live." Said Doctor Phillip. Then I realized something, that's the reason she stopped taking her pills. It was all my fault everything in this moment it's all my fault.
Once the doctors had left I went in to see my Ma. I apologized and told her that I was sorry for forcing her to take her meds and that I had no idea that she could live without them. She told me "James this isn't your fault non of it is, God gave me the life I have and I wouldn't want anyone else to have it. I am a tough lady and I will get better I promise. You understand me?" "Yes Ma." was my only response. I knew that something had to change and I had to make a difference, I needed to make Ma better. I didn't know how but I was going to find a way.
As days passed and Ma's days we're dwindling, she only had 7 days to live. I knew that I had to act fast. Everyday I still went into town talked to Jerry and then would go home. I would tell Jerry about my perfect fantasy life that I had at home, and everyday he would admire my yellow boots. I then remembered my first conversation with Jerry. It was when these boots made me tell Jerry that my life was perfect. I then sprinted home and gave my mom my boots. I told that she had to have them with her at all times. "These boots are going to make you feel better Ma." Ma didn't fight me she just simply said yes.
Slowly Ma started to get better she started to get up and walk again without needing any help which was great. I was so proud of her, the doctors had changed her medication so it wasn't as much in one tablet. The day she was suppose to past she never did. Those boots I gave her made her better. I fixed my Ma I made her able to walk and to live life again. I can't believe my yellow boots did this for me. I went over to her bedside and looked at the boots, I kissed them and told them thank you and that one day I was gong to need them again. Those boots saved my Mas life they were truly magical.
Now after 27 years Ma is so healthy, she is so happy and fell in love again. I was so happy for her, that life she always wanted she got it, she is so happy and so healthy. All because of these boots. I was so proud of my Ma for being such a strong women and to overcome the hardest thing in life. Just remember that no matter what also look on the bright side because something good is coming your way. God gives the hardest roads to the people who he believes can fight through them.
So Janey I know you're sitting in this hospital bed and you think everything is wrong in your life. Just remember darling that everything is going to get better.
"Daddy? Do you have those magical boots still" "Of course Janey." I said as I handed them to my little daughter. I watched pick up those boots, get off of her hospital bed. She on her knees and put her hands together, she started to talk to god. "Thank you God for believing in me. Thank you for giving the hardest road that anyone could have I will beat cancer just like Grammie did, and to these yellow boots, I expect a lot out of you. I want you to make me healthy. Healthy enough to walks with out pain and to play with dolls again. Thank you god! Amen" I looked down at this little girl that I had raised, I had tears in my eyes knowing that I had to make sure that all her little dreams came true. "Everything in life isn't handed to you you must work hard for everything that you want and need. Always look up and never look back I love you Janey" I spoke softly, I kissed her head and watched her dose off into a peaceful sleep.
