Forgotten city

Alissa didn't even know why she was there in the first place. Actually she did, but now she just wanted to be home. She kept telling herself that she wasn't scared, but she would be lying to herself. The only reason she was at the abandoned city in the first place was because she wanted to see if it actually existed.
It all started when Alissa found the book. It was amethyst blue with fading gold letters written across the top. They read “Forgotten Worlds.” When she opened it up the pages were crisp, but the edges worn out. She found one “forgotten world” that peaked her interest. Somewhere that was not too far from her own city.
The trail began at the end of a dead end road. Alissa positioned herself right in front of it. She looked at the “Do not enter sign” with a long chain hanging from two wooden posts. Ignoring it, she lifted the rusty chain and went under it. She started walking through the dense forest. There were trees surrounding her and branches crept onto the trails. The tall grass was almost up to her knees. She could tell no one had been on these trails in years.
As she walked along only small pockets of sunshine peeked through the dense trees. Alissa made her way through the trails and listened to the trees rustle as the breeze swept over them. It was so peaceful out there all by herself. She felt like she made a lot of progress, but there was no sign of the trail ending soon. As the sun started to set she decided it was time to head back so she turned around and headed back, dragging her feet along. She was a little disappointed. About halfway through the trails she noticed something. The sun setting in the west uncovered a path she hadn’t seen before. The whole pathway illuminated, but trees had covered the entrance. Alissa pushed her way through the trees and made her way down the path. She could see the end of it. When she reached the end she knew found what she was looking for.
In front of her were shadows casting down from the worn down buildings. It was deserted, only being inhabited by birds as she could hear their songs. She made her way towards the neglected city, noticing the vines running up each building. As she got closer she heard something unusual. It sounded like a faint cry. Alissa tried looking through the opaque windows, but couldn't see anything. She then stood outside the building and put her ear up to the building to hear it better. It suddenly stopped. She felt a little uneasy now. She wanted to leave now. Alissa then turned around to see something that surprised her. She only saw a brief glimpse of it. It was the outline of what seemed to be a person. This was all before she blacked out from what she believed was a vicious hit.
Alissa woke up to pitch black. She couldn’t see anything. She didn’t know where she was or what time it was. She sat up, but felt like she was going to black out again. Her head was pounding with a deep pain. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you here to rescue us?” Her world was spinning. Alissa just wanted to go home now. She was scared for what might happen to her.
