The Glory of the Diamond
The batter exits the dugout with a graceful screech of his sharp, metal cleats grinding the pavement. He loosens his arms and back, swinging with fluidity. White noise fills his ears and the pleasant odor of pine tar fills his nose. His teammate retired, while the batter establishes clarity through his laser sharp focus, his eyes never leaving the pitcher. The pressure bore down like dead weight on the dugout, the crowd, and attentive fans. The batter takes his step into the box, turface and dirt crunching like kit kats beneath his feet, while an intrigued crowd awaits a feat of greatness. An unusual silence enters the stadium as nerves reach an all time high. The pitch is delivered. KAWHAM! The crack of the bat creates a deafening roar and a thundering shake from 40,000 large within the stadium. The ball rockets over the fence as if it were a lightning bolt, cracking across the sky. The player circles the bases round and round, filling up with glory and pride with each step. Peanuts, Cracker-Jacks, and beverages make for little projectiles, filling the bleachers like an airspace. The player touches home and turns to the dugout, his teammates like animals in a cage, spawning a ruckus. A tip of the cap to the crowd makes for another storm of excitement. Chants and hollers boom through the city! The continuous clapping echoes throughout the ballpark,as the next batter takes his step into the box, hoping to repeat history.

This piece was created for a creative writing assignment in my AP Literature and Composition class. The use of literary devices was encouraged to establish an atmosphere behind an event (In this case, a baseball player hitting a home run). I have a large passion for the game of baseball and was proud of being able to construct many aspects of what it is like to hit a home run during a professional game. I believe it to be one of the most exciting events in sports and hope that many other can feel my passion through this piece.
