The sun radiated bright and golden above the horizon and glistened against the fur and skin of the students that climbed and crawled into Jungle Middle School. Majestic birds of white fluttered across the skyline with the such beauty and reflected their appearance on the river below like a mirror on the floor. A sturdy, ancient tree in the jungle housed a school that was just beginning with first period.
“You will have three weeks to create a model of your habitat,” roared Mr. Lion.
Segenam the sloth thought “Wow, this’ll be easy, I just have to make a simple tree!”
In his next class, Mr. Ram explained, “For Monday you shall have a 20 leaf-paged essay discussing the main points of how humans are destroying our habitats.”
Segenam joked, “Wow! An 20 leaf-paged essay! I could do this in my sleep!”
Obsert the Owl, Segenam’s friend, who lives in a neighboring forest, could not ignore Segenam, so he advised, “Segenam, my friend, heed my warning, and do your assignments now, when you have the chance, don’t sleep through the three weeks thinking you can do it in one day!”
Segenam responded, “Please stop trying to sound smart and don’t tell me I can’t sleep, I’m a sloth for Dog’s sake.” At that, Segenam went into his cozy habitat and began to sleep. Days past and weeks past, and Segenam did not think to work on any of the assignments.
Finally, when Segenam decides to start his assignments two days before they’re due, his mother calls him, “Segenam, go to the swim party with your friends in the Jungle river!”
“Fine mom!” Segenam bellowed back. Segenam thought to himself, “I’ll just do this Sunday.”
One day before his assignments were due, Segenam began to work on his essay. However, his father commanded, “Segenam rebuild the habitat and collect the leaves for tonight’s dinner.”
“But Dad! I need to work on this essay! Like I really have to work on this! It’s due tomorrow! And I also have this habitat model-”
“I don’t give a wasps’ nest!” his dad roared. “Rebuild and get the leaves or else no food for you tonight!” Segenam clenched his claws and angrily banged his two hands on his table as he climbed his way out of his room in frustration. Segenam stared right at his father’s raging eyes, knowing that if he had one more complaint, all ants would rise against him and wither away at his bodily flesh. Segenam was forced to do the chores, unable to do any of the assignments. When it was time for school the day after, Segenam confessed.
“What do you mean you didn’t do it? I gave you three weeks! How can you not make simple tree within three weeks?” interrogated Mr. Lion.
“I’m sorry, I really am sorry, just give me one more day to-”
“No! I’m sending an e-leaf to your mother right now and let me guess, you didn’t do Mr. Ram’s assignment either, right?”
“Correct…” replied Segenam.
During lunch, Obsert found Segenam, depressed at the fact that he will be receiving a
zero for both major assignments and how his parents were furious with him.
“Oh Segenam, Oh Segenam” Obsert started, “Thou should have heed my warning, no need for waiting ‘till the last second for anything.”

Moral: Do not wait until the last second with anything in life.

This fable was based on a middle school experience of waiting until the last second to do projects.
