Subject: DInner at Herot
Dear Mom,
I went to Herot one night and was filled with joy as I laid eyes on halls full of dinner. While all of those stupid Gaets were partying, I lurked outside awaiting my time to pounce. As the men began to fall asleep, I started to approach the gates to Herot. My adrenaline was pumping. Dinner was about to be served! I took them up with my claws and quickly ate them, just how you taught me. Their warm blood on my tongue felt like heaven on earth. The meat of those swedish fools was simply delicious! I ate and ate until I could not eat anymore. I ate a total of thirty men that night. I had developed an insatiable hunger for the soldiers’ flesh. This hunger was so overpowering that I could constantly smell the aroma of their blood. Because of my success on the first night, I decided to go back to the dinner- filled celebration hall again. However, this time as I began eating the men, they tried to escape! How dare my dinner try to run away from me! But it was okay, I still had a hearty serving of meat.
Love, Grendel
P.S. I think King Hrothgar might be upset about my killing sprees. I tried to go back to Herot in hopes of another meal, but I was surprised to see no one was there. I think he may have moved his soldiers because they are scared of me. It feels good to be feared, but I am beginning to get a little bit hungry. I hope they return to Herot soon.

Subject: Food that fought back
Dear Mom,
Today was a day of confusion and a great deal of pain. During my normal stalking of Herot, I was shocked to find that there were people in Herot again. Twelve long years had passed. It was finally my chance to eat a good meal, other than the slimy frogs outside my house.WHen I saw how secured Herot was, I became frightened. Who could be in there? I persisted and entered Herot. I quickly swooped up the first man and ate him. The warm flesh and blood was absolutely delectable, but just one man would not be enough. I then approached the next man. Something was very different. It is usually easy for me to eat someone, but this man tried to fight back. it was Beowulf. How dare that rescuer of men try to defeat me? I was so shocked that he was challenging me that i did not know how to respond! Beowulf was unnaturally strong. He punched, pulled, swung, and ripped at every part of my body. He was truly hurting me. I fought back with all the strength in my body, but it was not enough. I had a short reprieve when Beowulf tried to hurt me with his sword, for i could never be hurt by weapons. Beowulf eventually noticed that the sword was not working, so he then began fighting with his own two hands.I then heard a crack and a tear that sounded like the skin of a person ripping as i bit into them. The noise was my arm. Beowulf had ripped my arm right out of my shoulder. I had never felt a pain any worse. I could not help but to cry out in utter anguish. I ran as fast as i could back to our swamps. I do not know how much longer i will live. The blood is still flowing out of my shoulder. It is not showing any signs of stopping.
Love, Grendel
