Open ME
I squint as the bright light floods into my eyes. I look up and I see you for the first time and smile a little. I had hope that I would get a good one this time, unlike the booger picking nuisance from last time. I can practically (no pun intended) read the excitement on your face as you begin this first page. But I guess I should introduce myself. I’m Benjamin, Ben for short. What’s your name? Your eyebrows furrow together in a slight, adorable confusion. Yes,I’m talking to you. Oh? Well that’s a beautiful name. You giggle and smile again. You ask me something, and the melody of your voice reaches my ears for the first time. To answer your question, not all books can talk. In fact, there are only a few of us. And we wait our whole lives for someone to pick us up and read. Of course they always put us back down, but we meet many people this way. You’re not the first of course. I’ve had plenty of readers before you, but I’ve been on this bookshelf for as long as I can remember.
You lean back against the bookshelf and tuck your knees to your chest before looking back down. Now chewing your bottom lip almost nervously, you speak again. Where did I come from? That’s...that’s harder. I just remember one day...waking up,I think. It was like a stamp had been pressed onto my chest, and all of a sudden here I was. I was confused. I knew I was in a book, but I didn’t understand why. That’s when I met the person who made me.He called himself the author. He explained everything to me. That I was special.I had a consciousness because he believed. A sort of ancient magic or something. He also told me to stay neutral, and to try and stick to my story. Most people won’t believe me if I tell them. They’ll think it is just a book, albeit a cleverly written one.
I’ve accepted that for a while now. Which is why I find it weird that you’re responding me. No one else ever does. At least...not like you are. Like you believe. You open your mouth to say something else, but your mother calls your from far away. You have to go? I should’ve expected.Living here means that no one gets through more than the first few pages before leaving. It was nice meeting you though! Have a great day, beautiful. A blush crosses your face and I’m happy to have made you happy. I think the book will begin to close like all the other times, but you just smile and say, “I’m yours.” I’m in shock. You..you want me? A nod of your head, and I suddenly feel as light as a feather. You’re going to buy me! A small giggle escapes your lips, and I feel like this is only the beginning of a great adventure that we will write together.
