Power, Politics, and Defense
Intro
You have been accepted into Yale Law School. Those were the words that would change my life.
I knew I wanted to be a lawyer since 9th grade, when my parents split up and my life revolved around a court. Although it was a terrible experience, I realized I wanted to revolutionize and reform the court system. The way our judicial system remains is a system of injustices—many famous people (cough, cough OJ Simpson) get away with murder, yet some nerd smokes weed once, gets caught, and goes to prison for five years. Honestly, these sentences are absurd. Doing drugs only harms yourself, yet murder harms many people—and just the fact that you took a life is bad enough!
I have always been an ambitious and proactive person; when I want something, I work my ass off to get it. Although I do not always get what I wanted, worked for, or deserved, I try my best.
So when I turned 16 and got a car, my freedom and independent mindset opened new opportunities. I began reading the constitution, watching C-Span, and studying state laws. Additionally, I started taking paralegal, government, and business courses at Dallas Community College through dual enrollment.
The knowledge I gained allowed me to become more determined to get into one of the top law schools in the world! Although Harvard was my first choice, Columbia was my second choice, UCLA law was my third choice, and Stanford was my fourth choice, I got into my fifth choice, Yale.
First day at Yale Law
It is September 8th 2013, and a sexy, ambitious, youthful 22 year old with a bachelor’s degree in public policy (aka me) gets off the plane in Connecticut and zooms off to Yale. I put my belongings in my dorm, touch-up on makeup, and go to the freshman orientation.
I walk in to a seemingly crowded room of freshman. I sit next to some random brunette guy.
“I’m Christian Bass,” he says while leaning closer to me.
Dang! He’s good looking.
“Like the son of Congressman Chace Bass?!” I say. It’s not like I’m to THE son of a powerful and influential man. Wait, did I seriously say that out loud? This guy must think I’m a real creep or something.
“Yeah I guess you could say that.”
“I’m Erika, by the way.”
“What classes are you taking?”
“I’m taking international law and-”
“With Mercer?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
When I get back to my dorm, my roommate and best friend, Elena, is there.
“Elena! I’ve missed you,” I say.
“I’ve missed you too! I’m so ready to start business school. How was your orientation?”
“Oh my gosh. I met the son of Chace Bass!”
“No way!”
“Yes. He even talked to me!”
“What did he say to you?”
“Nothing much. Oh except he’s in my international law class.”
“Is he attractive?”
“Sort of.” I mean he wasn’t super attractive, but he definitely was hot.
“You know what this means?”
“What?”
“You two can become friends and you’ll have easy access to become some powerful woman!”
I was thinking the same. But I don’t want to put my hopes up. I want to work hard and become powerful myself, not through some guy’s dad.
“Well let’s go out and celebrate our first day at Yale! There’s a party at some millionaire’s house that I was invited to,” said Elena.
“Let’s go.”
The party that changed it all
Elena and I walk into the party looking glam and fabulous. I’m wearing my black Versace lace dress, black Brian Atwood d’orsay pumps, and a gold Dolce and Gabanna clutch. Elena is wearing an Alice and Olivia cobalt peplum dress, silver Michael Kors booties, and a silver and black envelope Jimmy Choo clutch.
I am talking to Elena when I hear my name. I turn around and see Christian.
“Hey Erika,” says Christian.
“Oh hi Christian,” I say arrogantly.
“Would you like a drink?”
“Sure.”
He gives me some champagne.
“This is my best friend’s house. Would you like a tour?”
“Sure.”
He takes my hand and I follow him upstairs.
“Here’s the living room,” says Christian.
It is ginormous with an absurdly huge TV and leather couches. He drags me to the kitchen with granite topped counters.
“Here’s the kitchen.”
He drags me to the next room.
“Here’s my bedroom.”
There’s a king size bed, a TV, a huge walk-in closet, and a desk. I sit down on the bed. He sits down next to me.
“Erika… I want to get to know you.”
His gorgeous green eyes gaze at me and he leans in closer...
One semester later
After my first semester at Yale, a scandal emerges. Some Senator has been caught dealing drugs. He needs not just one lawyer, but many lawyers, and he wants the best in the business. He already hired two big shot criminal defense lawyers and apparently wants some Harvard and Yale law students to assist the lawyers.
Of course, with Senator Richard’s power and money, he’ll easily be able to win this case.
The thing is, Senator Richard is Chace Bass’s best friend, and Christian will be doing research into the case.
I was in my criminal law class on Tuesday, when the teacher got a phone call and told me to go to another classroom. I enter and see a tall, broad-shouldered twenty something year old.
“Hi Erika, I’m Aaron Johnson, the advisor to Senator Richard. As you may have already known, my team is recruiting the best law students and attorneys to work on Richard’s case. You are one of the best law students at Yale, and you have also been nominated by Chase Bass. We want you to work on the trial.”
Oh my gosh. They want me to work on a super high-profile case? Is my dream coming true?
“I would love to!” I say without trying to get too excited.
The week before the trial
Senator Richard’s legal team has been frantically finding evidence, analyzing past drug-related cases, and preparing Senator Richard to be cross-examined. I find that the defense team has compelling arguments and substantial evidences that prove that Senator Richard is not a drug dealer.
All the law students, including myself, have been analyzing drug-related cases to find a strategy. I have found that there has to be enough evidence of drug dealing to be convicted. Hence, the main point that the defense team is arguing is that there is insufficient evidence to convict the senator. The team has been investigating the evidence that the opposing side wants to use against the senator to see if the evidence qualifies as sufficient enough. We have found that some evidence was obtained illegally by Senator Richard’s opponent for the 2014 election, Matt Vendetta.
In past Supreme Court cases, it has been affirmed that any evidence obtained illegally cannot be used against you. In addition, Matt Vendetta’s involvement will seem suspicious, and it will look like Matt Vendetta framed Senator Richard’s in order to obtain a set in the US Senate.
