The Road
The path through the woods was well-traveled. It was worn deep into the ground and it had seen many travelers come and go. Feet covered in thick boots with rugged soles would wander their way up and down the trail. Hooves protected with metal shoes would clop along the path, and occasionally the rubber tires from a bike would wind its way through the dirt.
The evergreen trees around the path were wary of this new trail when it had first been born. But after many seasons had passed, the evergreens had grown accustomed to it and embraced it with their shady branches.
Over the seasons, the path watched the number of travelers dwindle until nobody came at all for a very long time. It became so overgrown with invasive plants, that it could no longer see the evergreens that had shaded it. It desperately hoped that someone would come and uncover the path.
It wasn't long before the trail heard strange noises echoing through the forest. There was loud buzzing, yelling, and occasional crashes that shook the ground. This went on for several seasons, until one day, the path was uncovered. It nearly jumped for joy when it felt those prickly plants being yanked off of the trail. But its happiness was short lived when it saw that all the evergreens were gone. It had never seen a sky so big.
On the next sun-up, the pain began. Large metal machines gouged into the path and tore it apart. It screamed and screamed, but no one heard it. It could feel itself being ripped up from the earth and it could feel itself slowly falling apart into nothingness.
Many years passed, and the path had long since died. In its place was a road.

Nature has always been a refuge for me. When I am hiking in the woods or the mountains, a strange sense of peace washes over me, and I temporarily forget the stresses of life. I hope that nature will stay that way.
