Don't Drink Alone

“Heh… Why are people so afraid of death,” Yuuto asked the bartender suddenly as she downed another beer. He gave her an odd look and began cleaning a glass off for the next customer. She had been there drinking most of the night and he was expecting her to pass out at any moment. He knew he probably should have stopped serving her ages ago, but money was money. So long as she was paying he would serve.

“I suppose it’s not knowing what happens after you die,” the bartender answered as he began mixing the drink for the next customer. Yuuto looked up at him and blinked.

“That so?” She asked.

“I’m just guessing here,” the bartender confessed as he began to shake the cocktail shaker. Yuuto shut her eyes at the noise and frowned.

“Maybe you should call it a night,” the woman beside her suggested as the bartender poured her chocolate martini. “You don’t look so well.”

“Maybe I should,” Yuuto muttered as she stared at her empty glass. “Bartender, give me the strongest thing you’ve got. If I pass out—well, I guess I’ll have to stop drinking, but if I come out of it all right, you have to answer my questions. You’ve been dodging them all night long.”

“Oooh, a challenge,” the woman chirped as she took a sip of her martini. She seemed to be enjoying the show.

“All right, I’ll accept that challenge,” the bartender said as he shook his head. “But please think about it first. I don’t want you passing out here.”

“I’ll be fine! Worst case scenario you can call the number on this card. He’ll know what to do,” Yuuto said as she turned to the woman beside her. “If I pass out, make sure he calls that number, okay?”

“Will do,” the woman agreed as she continued to sip her martini.

“Well then, do your worst,” Yuuto said with a smirk as she awaited her next, and possibly last, drink.

“Let me prepare it first,” the bartender groaned as he turned around and grabbed a bottle from the shelf. Yuuto shook her head in response.

“I’ll drink it straight up. Just pour me a glass of it,” she demanded. The bartender looked at her as if she’d gone crazy.

“I can’t do that. If anything happens to you, it will be my fault,” he said as he put the bottle back. Yuuto and the woman frowned at him.

“Too much of a coward,” Yuuto shouted at him as she stood up. Her legs wobbled underneath her as she reached and grabbed the bartender by the tie. He gagged at the alcohol on her breath and turned his face to the side.

“C-calm down!” The woman squeaked as she tried to sit Yuuto back down. The psychopomp, however, refused to be calmed down. She balled her hand into a fist and swung at the bartender. He just barely had enough time to unclip his tie and get out of the way.

“What are you doing?” He squeaked as she swung at him again, this time falling over the bar and knocking a few glasses onto the floor. The few customers in the store had all turned their attention to the scene Yuuto was causing.

The bouncer, who had been hitting on some women in the corner, had finally turned to the brewing fight and rushed to break it up.

“What do you think you’re doing,” he growled as he forced himself between Yuuto and the bartender.

“He won’t serve me my drink,” Yuuto spat as she glared at the newcomer. He wilted under her gaze and backed up a step.

“Uh… maybe you should just serve her the drink,” the bouncer squeaked out. The bartender rolled his eyes at the suggestion and looked at Yuuto. If he were to give her what she wanted, would she stop?

“Very well… The bottle is right there. Help yourself to it,” the bartender hissed as he turned his back on her. Yuuto grinned and snatched the bottle from the shelf.

“Absinthe, huh? Isn’t this stuff illegal here,” she teased as she took off the top. The bartender refused to look back, despite hearing as she downed the entire bottle of it. He knew how that would end—with her dead somewhere from alcohol poisoning.

“Whatever happens… it isn’t my fault,” he said. His voice was cold as he spoke and he quickly left to the backroom of the bar. The bouncer, left standing there, quickly chased after him.

“Ha,” Yuuto said with a laugh as she keeled over. It took all her strength to catch herself as she fell, and after that she blacked out.

“You really shouldn’t drink so much, Yuuto,” Shiin scolded as he carried the Yuuto’s body back to her house. “When you die like that, you frighten people. That’s why you’ve been banned from so many bars.”
