Nathan's Life Changer
The life of the party that’s what he was known as. Nathan ruled the school as an all-state basketball player and one of the most popular guys he had the whole school wrapped around his finger. That was until one day during the fall of his senior year one conversation changed everything.
“Nathan, I have heard a lot of rumors about you that I’m not happy about.”
“Oh yeah coach, like what?”
“Let’s just say your behavior at ‘teenage get-togethers’ I don’t approve of.”
“Yeah, cause you know what goes on there, a whole lot of movies and junk food-”
“And a whole lot more, I wasn’t born yesterday Nathan and no matter how good of a basketball player you are, I won’t accept you partying.”
“What are you saying Coach Johnson?”
“I think you know what I’m saying Nathan, unless you stop partying you won’t have a spot on this team.”
“But- but- but coach I’m the best senior we’ve got this year, this is supposed to be our year!”
“There are plenty of guys willing to work hard to be as good as you are, I won’t tolerate partying.”
Nathan walks out of the office, not knowing what to think of his conversation with his coach. He knows he wants to play college basketball, but giving up partying would not only give up his friends, but his reputation too.
Its Friday night Nathan and his friends hit up the local diner and grab a burger to eat before heading back to one of his buddies houses. Nathan realizes this has to be the last party he attends because when he is playing college basketball all the partying he missed out on won’t matter, but he figures, what’s one more night of fun?.
All the guys are kicking back drinking and having a good time until
KNOCK KNOCK “Open up this is the Police!”
Nathan’s stomach drops, the police enter the house and set the breathalyzer on the counter and start dumping all the alcohol out. Parents are called and drinking tickets are given. Nathan starts to see his whole life flash before his eyes, what about college basketball? All I wanted was to party one last time.
The school was notified about all the tickets; Nathan receives a pass to his Coach’s office. Great, just who I want to talk to. Nathan walks into the office and sees his coach sitting at the desk.
“So you have decided not to play this season” Says Coach Johnson.
“Coach the party was a mistake; I told myself it would be my one.”
“And I told you there would be no basketball if there were ANY more parties.”
“I’m sorry Nathan I just can’t have you on the team if you’re not respecting my rules.”
“But coach it was only my first offense, I can take an alcohol abuse class and be involved in school activities 6 weeks from now, just in time for tryouts.”
“I’m sorry but I warned you Nathan and I need to SEE that you are changing and as of now you’re not showing me that.
Nathan walks out of the office, determined to change the Coach Johnson’s mind Right after school Nathan heads to the rec center. He warms up, practices his jumps shots, dribbling, post moves, and threes he continues these vigorous workouts for the next month every day after school. And little did Nathan know Coach Johnson worked out at the rec center, where the workout room overlooked the gym.
Nathan came home from the gym two days before tryouts; his phone rings “Hi is this Nathan? I’m John from the Ohio State basketball team I was wondering if you would want to come to the college watch the guys play and maybe see if you were interested in our basketball program; your high school coach tells me you’re a hard worker and plan on playing college basketball, of course after you finish a strong senior year for Coach Johnson.
