Big Sister

Monday, October 13. The day that changed my life forever. It was just a normal day. My mom woke me up, put on my clothes, and made me her famous, waffle taco. My mom put on my shoes and we were headed for school. The only thing different from this morning was that my mom didn't get out of the car with me. Normally she would since she was a teacher at my pre school. As we were sitting in car line she told me she will see me later and to have a good day. I felt weird getting out in car line with the other kids. I knew my mom was taking the day off but I don't remember asking or even caring.

My teacher, Mrs. Denny, got me out of the car and walked me inside. As I got into my classroom, I saw my best friend, Jessica. We sat together ever single day at circle time. We did the same thing just like every other day. Sang God Bless America, said the alphabet, played on the playground, had snack, and it was almost time for lunch. I took my purple lunch box off my hook, sat down, and as soon as I was about to bit into my peanut butter sandwich, Mrs. Denny called me and told me to come in the hallway. The shy, nervous kid I was, I was only thinking the worst. I thought I was in trouble. I get into the hall and I see my dad standing in the lobby with my three oldest sisters, Paige, Brooke, and Aubrey. All three of them had their Our Lady of the Lake uniform on standing there, not saying anything just smiling bigger than ever.

The next thing I knew we were on the way to St. Tammany hospital. My mom was having a baby! It felt like hours of being in that car. My dad couldn't have been driving any faster. I could not wait to meet her. I was just picturing me holding her for the first time. This would be the very day that I become a big sister. I, Bailey Michelle Patterson will no longer be the youngest one of the family. I will set examples and be a role model just like my old sisters are to me.

We finally arrived! We jumped right out of the car and ran straight across the parking lot. I remember passing a big pond with little ducks swimming inside. The sky was drizzling and partly cloudy. Normally I would think a day like this is gross but this day was beautiful to me. This type of beautiful is one that you only feel a few times in your lifetime. This day was like a miracle. This miracle was just inside the building in front of me.

My dad and my three sisters met Maw Maw and Paw Paw in the front of the hospital. My dad with the video camera, and the six of us rode up the elevator to the top floor. As we were anxiously waiting for the doors to open, Maw Maw told me, "She has your nose!" My nose? That's it? I wanted her to look exactly like me. At the time I was so disappointed that all she had was my nose. I was so bummed, but I knew when I actually see her, I will not care what she looked like. I would be so happy no matter what kind of nose, hair, or eyes she had. I had very high expectations for this new baby. I knew for sure she would be gorgeous, mostly because she came from my mom who is very gorgeous herself.

We got to our floor. We started down the long, white hallway too excited to walk. My dad had to tell us to stop running, but we were too excited. When my dad caught up to us he said we have to be quiet because she is so little and will cry if there are too loud of noises. Of course, this made me completely silent. I did not want my little sister to cry the first time I saw her. On the door was a small, dry erase board. Written in pink marker read: "Delaney Leigh Patterson." We gently opened the door and I saw a tall woman in scrubs and my mom laying in a big white bed with a brown blanket at the bottom. She held Delaney close to her heart. Right there, in her arms, was my little sister. I didn't care about the noise I made this time, I ran right up to her. My mom told me, "Look, she's looking at you Bailey." She was. Her big blue eyes starred right at me, as I was at her.

She looked like one of my baby dolls I had at home except she was real! I just kept looking at how small and cute she was. She was wrapped up in a soft, pink blanket with a pink hat covering her little ears. I knew she would be pretty but she was even prettier than I imagined. Her tiny little fingers wrapped around mine as she continued to stare at me.

I couldn't believe this was actually my little sister. Most importantly, I couldn't believe I was finally a big sister. I will be able to teach her everything I know just like my older sisters did for me. We will go to school together, share clothes, and probably fight along the way, but it will just make us closer. I knew she would have a big impact on my life, but little did I know this little miracle will grow up to be my very best friend.
