Kindred, by Octavia Butler, is a heartbreaking novel about love, loss, and, predominantly, slavery. It follows the story of Dana, an African-American woman in the 1970s sent against her will to a southern plantation in the late 18-19th centuries. The lives of herself, her husband, and her ancestors fall on her shoulders. It's a chilling story with brutally realistic portrayals of slavery that I believe everyone would benefit from reading.
