Not Alone, Not Alone
I am the last one on Earth
  But I am not alone
The stars whisper to me the histories of the sun
While the broken moon sinks, blushing, below the horizon
I am the last one on Earth
  (But I am not—)
The creek babbles about the fish that used to swim
While a two-headed deer tries to drink of its substance
I am the last one on Earth
  (But I am—)
I shelter under rocks with the sick animals
When the burning rain falls again from the sky and eats the trees away
I am the last one on Earth
  (But I—)
I’ve never seen a flower bloom, but
The garden of burns and bruises on my skin is beautiful enough for me
I am the last one on Earth
  (But—)
I lost my hair a long time ago, long ago
I think it was like grass, soft and green, like grass, soft
I am the last one on Earth
At night I run through the forest and sing the names of the stars
Most of them died when they struck the Earth
Most of the Earth died, too
  But not I!
I am the last one on Earth
And I have been since God-knows-when
