What can be said of the lowly carrot?
It comes from the ground, how nasty is that?
It’s one long stick, so how could you share it?
A favorite food for naked mole rats.
It’s bumpy and ugly with roots like hair,
Tucked ‘neath the ground with ants, beetles, and worms.
Can you trust a thing below the earth's layer,
Living amongst protists, fungus, and germs?
How can you tell when they’re ready and ripe?
All you can see is a fuzzy green top.
Got to be honest, why wouldn’t I gripe?
It is one of the most confusing crops!
But maybe my judgment’s a bit hasty,
Because I'll admit they are quite tasty.

This Shakespearean Sonnet was originally written for a class assignment, but I got a bit carried away. I couldn't think about what topic to choose and decided to ask my sister. I don't think she really cared, as she just tossed out a random word like carrots. However, it ended up being one of my favorite poems I've ever written.
