A Forest at Nightfall
red dusk shines between dark trees
whose branches twitch and shudder in a soft breeze
fallen leaves that rest in the quiet understory
will never again feel the sun’s glory
crawling vines and creeping weeds suffocate all sound with ease
darkness deepens in the sight
of a quickly descending night
eyes peer from hollowed places
despite concealing gloom, unwilling to show their faces
all shapes take on new meaning in the dwindling halflight
