Man's Best Friend
Lazing about, not willing to move
You sleep for hours on end.
Two thirds of the day are wasted away
As you lack the conscience to contend.
When will you leave me alone?
My response to that is “I’m not sure.”
When I bend down to pet you, however,
Only purring must become a chore.
Brushing your head against my hand one minute,
Biting my arm the next.
I can’t tell what mood you’re in,
Despite and no matter the context.
Hissing at the toy I wave in front of you,
Chittering your teeth out towards the hill,
If only I knew what went on in your head
Then I’d understand the dead bird you left on the sill.
When you’re unable to reach a higher space,
Then a hand to you, I will lend.
If only you would wag your tail, then surely
You would instead have the title of “man’s best friend”.
Tripping me up at the top of the stairs,
Or scratching at the screen door,
Of all the things you do to annoy me,
I still could not love you, my cat, more.
