How Long Can We Stay?
Spring grass coming up through winter dirt
Summer flowers coming up through spring grass
Breeze blowing through leafless trees
Warm air, shining sun--
How long can we stay?
The pavement becomes my seat
The grass still wet from spring showers
It's peaceful out here
Yet the cars break through the silence and the singing of the birds
Making me uneasy--
How long do we have to stay?
Uneven grass
Mulch around the trees
The big buildings surrounding this beautiful place--
Do I want to stay?
The birds overpower the cars and the wind blows past me warm and slow
The sun is warm on the back of my neck
I look out at the fields
I look past the buildings
I close my eyes
Peace.
How long can we stay?
