Where I’m from

Where I'm from there wasn't much money
We lived in a small duplex.
Living with my older brother in one room
Not allowed to have a pet,
Old green couch that has had its days.
Flip phones that barely work.

I'm from a place where my mom and dad
Would yell at my brother for punching me.
Where there wasn’t much room to play so I
Would play tag in the kitchen and split my eyebrow open
On the cutting board.

Dad would rock me to sleep at night with a lullaby,
He would almost fall asleep doing it cause we were
Such a handful.
dad was the one to entertain us while
mom would be cooking or cleaning,

I love where I'm from but I'm not there anymore,
I’ll always remember where i’m from.
