I am not a mermaid
Sadly I am not a mermaid
I drown and I climb mountains
I learned to live in a desert and expect rain once a year
But I look to the sea
Too fondly to not throw myself in
The current knows I cannot go with it
If I wanted to I would have learned how to swim
I would have offered my muscles and strength if I wanted the ocean to believe the love I claim
But my feet slipped on rocks and burned in painted cement
I dip them in water and praise it exotic
It is painful to realize you are made for something else
When your gut tells you stories of great ocean depths
How they’ll be more beautiful than any height you can imagine
Because your eyes they are only fooling when you they tell you that the stars are the most beautiful things you can reach
You are looking in the wrong direction
Blame your calluses on the winds that pushed through branches you could never hold on to for long
Tell your pain it is time to go
But I drown
Attempting.
