She cleaned her husband’s room. Lifting the mattress, she found a single fettered sock, forlorn, forgotten. She heard a knock. The CNO stood tall in uniform, imposing, like death itself. She broke down into tears at the news, she fell back against the wall, and clutched the lone sock, never finding its pair.
