King of Hell Creek
Alone and regal
in the dappled light
a giant begins to stir.
The morning fog spilling over its back like waves against the bow of a ship
With each thunderous step the earth trembles in fear as the beast moves,
Crashing through the bushes as if they were not there.
Out of the dim glow of the forest and into the bright clearing the beast bursts
Squinting in the glow of the morning
a shape appears.
An intruder.
An enemy.
With a guttural bellow four tons charges forwards
Gaining momentum,
Churning the earth beneath its feet
Raining destruction unto the creatures below.
In seconds he is upon the foreigner
All his bulk posed to plunge into the invader
Their massive heads collide
A titanic crack echoes through the forest, waking all those near
The beasts clash
Shoving, pushing, stabbing, slashing
The beasts clash
Thrusting, jostling, jabbing, hacking
Battered and bruised
Bloodied and battleworn,
The interloper bows its head
Submitting to the king
In the clearing the giant sits
Alone and regal
