The blue and white sign
Swaying with the wind
Has no idea what it holds
My tiny fingers holding
The windowsill
Peeking through the pane
Wondering how long
Until the red letters change
Glancing from the sign
To my best friend’s house
Across the street
I can only hope
I have a little more time
But time ticks faster
Than any little girl
Could imagine
So the dreaded day arrives
And the terrifying sign changes
And so does the girl
