Well, I Don't Know

I don’t know about you,
But I’m really tired of shrugging my shoulders,
In the wake of mass tragedy,
And saying,” well…
Seems there’s nothing we can do.”

Depending on who you listen to,
There has been between six and eighteen school shootings since January 1st,
You’d think the US was cursed,
Even if you take the conservative estimate, that’s almost one a week
And that’s not counting all the gun violence not involving schools--
A statistic that’s just as bleak--
And yet we still do nothing

Well, who’d have guessed?
This is why the world thinks we’re still the wild west

I can buy a gun before I can drink beer;
That’s a little messed up, don’t you think?
Somewhere down the line, society decided alcoholic drinks
Were a bigger menace to the youth and society than machines literally designed to kill

I’m not even talking all guns here,
Keep your pistols, shotguns, and hunting rifles,
That’s fine with me,
Just don’t try and tell me you need an assault rifle to defend your house with,
Yeah right, and I need a flamethrower to fend off government takeover,
Do you hear how crazy that sounds?

Don’t tell me you need it for hunting, either
Cause, news flash, the deer don’t shoot back
Yes, I understand the 2nd Amendment
I just don’t think guns capable of firing 20 rounds a minute
Was what the founding fathers had in mind

It’s always thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers,
And while thoughts and prayers are fine enough,
They are not enough on their own;
I think it’s about time we did something
