The Night Before
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
It’s dark.
The only light I can see is one above me; illuminating warm, white linen that is draped overtop of me.
I avert my eye to the light source which also happens to be the culprit of the endless cacophony that feels as though an endless amount of bullets are penetrating the left side of my skull after each—
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
My eye throbs as the other rolls back to catch a glimpse of the reason I’m now awake.
I begin to see double, one eye being too swollen to keep up with the other as my gaze wanders around the ceiling.
I see two monitors.
Two IV bags.
Two nurses entering to silence the noisemaker.
Two mothers on the other side of the room, weeping in perfect unison.
Don’t worry, you two.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow, it will be better.

I wrote this after being discharged from the hospital after having an infection known as orbital cellulitis. This caused my eye to swell and my vision was very restricted. I spent a week getting medication through IV bags and undergoing surgery after the antibiotics seized to work. This poem is about he hardest night for me; the night before the surgery. I’m now fully recovered and I feel great! I actually got it from a simple untreated sinus infection. We didn’t know that’s what I had, so we didn’t think much of it when it was just a cough. So, a warning: if you have a nasty cough that lasts more than a month, it’s not just a cough. Make sure to see a doctor!!
