Two States One Girl
I am from beads thrown on Fat Tuesday
From Cafe du Monde and Tex Mex
I am from the creole and cajun traditions
Who Dat and Geaux Tigers
It felt like a rollar coaster driving down the streets
I am from the bluebonnet, magnolia, and cypress tree and
Hot and humid days
I’m from the Christmas at Susu’s and brunettes and blue eyes
From Michael and Mimi
And Margaret Grace
I’m from the southern manners and crawfish boils
Sit up straight, say “please”, and napkin in your lap
I’m from mass on Sundays, and grace before meals
I’m from cacti and the bayou, crawfish and jambalaya.
From the I my best friend, but I’m glad to be home
And the prayers for Harvey and Katrina.
Filled in albums kept on tables or stacked in closets, but always close to the heart
I am from two completely different cities, but two places that I call home.
