Tell Me, a Poem About Consent
Tell me
that the nightgown
opened its eyes
and gave you a wink
opened its mouth and said
“You have my consent”
Tell me
that the dress
was begging
to be touched
opened its mouth and said
“You have my consent”
Tell me
that the leggings
seductively used their voices
and asked for what you call
compliments
opened their mouths and said
“You have my consent”
Tell me
that the clothes asked for it
asked for anything
Tell me
that they even had a mouth to open and say
“You have my consent”
and I will laugh in your face.

I felt inspired, and almost obligated, to write this poem because of the recent events having to do with sexual abuse in our government and entertainment industries. Usually, I would say that my goal for my poetry is to have someone relate to it, but I don't feel as though I want to say that with this poem. I want to use this poem to help raise awareness. Unfortunately, I know there are people in the world, of both genders, who will relate to this poem, and hopefully, it will let you know that you are not alone.
