Hope, the reason why life struggles on
Yet so meaningless
Hope is the dream of the fool and the madman
But that does not mean that we should give it up
Merely because it is a mad desperate dream

Hope that we can yet stand together as one nation, in the face of hatred
Regardless of whether our parents hated each other or not
Hope that we can reach across the aisle, to build a better nation
instead of spreading hatred
Hope that our self-inflicted wounds might yet be healed
Hope that we can yet reforge that which was broken by our own arrogance

Hope that people can look beyond their own self-interests
and stand together for a common cause
That we can look beyond our own backyard and picket fence
to see how much we are hurting
Hope that soldiers overseas might yet come home alive
That no more families are ripped apart for the arrogance of a few
Hope that no more of our people are maimed for a cause that was lost
before we first put boots on the ground
Desperate and foolish dreams they may be
Yet they are all we have

Hope that at home all might yet come together, to forge a future that accepts everyone for who they are
Hope that a new day might yet dawn, as we fall into the twilight of democracy
Hope that together we can embrace the whole world, everyone hand in hand as we walk towards a bright new future
Standing together for a single cause, peace on earth in our time
A desire to build a future where such hopes are reality
Rather than the desperate longings of a child
Hope that we can embrace the future together as one

This poem was inspired by a moment of self-reflection that showed that all we really have for the future is hope.
