I walk in those elementary doors for the first time.
Smell the scent of the air.
Hear the noisy chatter of the children.
Feel the grip of my mother’s hand.
See the people who will soon become my friends.

Little did I know this would be where my friendships started.
Little did I know this would be where some friendships ended.
Little did I know these would be the best years of my life.
Little did I know this would be the times i’d miss the most.

I walk in those middle school doors for the first time.
Smell the scent of freshly applied perfume.
Hear the carried sound of giggles.
Feel the breeze as the locker doors open.
See the people who will soon become my best friends.

Little did I know this would be where my friendships started.
Little did I know this would be where some friendships ended.
Little did I know this would be the best years of my life.
Little did I know this would be the times I’d miss the most.

I walk in those high school doors.
Smell the mix of textbook pages and cologne.
Hear the jingle of car keys.
Feel the breeze as people rush past you trying to beat the late bell.
See the people who will soon become my family.

Little did I know this would be where my friendships started.
Little did I know this would be where some friendships ended.
Little did I know this would be the best years of my life.
Little did I know this would be the times I’d miss the most.

One day I will walk back in those school doors.
Smell the scent of the air I once breathed daily.
Hear the voices of my old classmates in my memory.
Feel the breeze of the kids rush past me.
See the people who were once my friends.

I’ll think:
Little did I know this would be where my friendships started.
Little did I know this would be where some friendships ended.
Little did I know these would be the best years of my life.
Little did I know these would be the times I’d miss the most.

But I will be back with a child of my own.
Smell the scent of their innocence.
Hear the excitement in their squeaky little voice.
Feel the tight grip of their goodbye hug.
See my child conquer each stage of life one step at a time.

Little do they know these will be where their friendships started.
Little do they know these will be where some friendships ended.
Little do they know these will be the best years of their life.
Little do they know these will be the times they will miss the most.
