I am From
I am from Sunday breakfast runs with dad before church,
biscuits and gravy,
greasy bacon, and sweet tea.
From “Hey y’all’s,” “yes ma'am” and “no sir’s.”
and humidity, blistering rain,
pollen and sneezes.
From “go outside” to grass stains, bruises and scars,
and “no crying” to
“suck it up cupcake.”
From Rob and Dana,
and jumping up and down at 8 pm when you heard the garage door open,
to “how was your day?”, “what did you learn?”, “did you finish your homework?”
I am from photos and videos of jamming to T-Pain and T-Swift in the car before football games,
to chanting “peel banana,” “we are the warhawks,” and “zoom,”
to launching tee shirts off into the student section.
From late nights studying and stress sessions,
to FaceTime to get help from friends,
to family prayers on the end of my twin size bed.
From anxiety and asthma attacks,
to thinking about the positives
and breathing in and out.
From children's hospitals, every tuesday and thursdays at 2 o’clock,
to procedures, to “feeling any better?” to depressing no’s, to “we’ve found something that could help” to smiling as big as possible, and hearing “we hopefully won’t have to see you here anymore.”
