New Day

Light lashes flutter
As my lids are resurrected
And the blurred image of light
Clarifies

My mind rises
Out of REM
Programmed
By a circadian clock
Breathe In
And
Release

A soft orange
Elevates the cream and blue
Rustling over my legs
Reviving themselves
From a low night’s slumber
Like an insect
I can’t help
But be drawn to the light
And with anonymous strength
My body falls over itself
To the left
Facing the morning sun
Breathe In
And
Release

A gentle beam of sunlight
Breaks through the gray drapes that hang
Before it
Draws a runway across my feet
Still swaddled in cotton
And silk
My toes
They curl and flex
Stretching
Up to my calves
My thighs
My spine
My neck
Tightened

And loose again
Breathe in
And
Release

A gentle smile
Surfaces upon my cheeks
Rosy with warmth and rest
My lips
Slightly chapped
Crack just a touch
As the smile grows
But I do not mind it at all
Breathe In
And
Release

Feel my fingers
Reach for the shadows on the ceiling
Falling back
Onto the creamy silk sheets
And grasping the comforting fleece
Of the blanket
That he gave me for Christmas last year
Drawing it towards my already warmed cheeks
To relieve my anxiety
In its thick blue-gray fibers
Woven together
Breathe In
And
Release

Light lashes flutter
As my lids are resurrected
And the blurred orange light
Clarifies
The blue, gray, cream, violet and peach colors
Vivid now
In my revitalized eyes
One more breath, one more release
So a new day begins
