When I Was Nine
In the mountains of Montana,
the sun gleamed on us.
I was ready to do it, ready to hold on for my life.
I was nine.
I saw the big waves splash against the rocks,
the white water caps rushing down the river.
Screams of joy came from the rafts.
I was nine.
I could learn to hold on.
I could get wet.
I could fly off, flip and still hold on.
I was ready
but,
I was nine.
I ran down the mountain, to see my family
holding on for their lives.
Their grins were from ear to ear.
My mom grabbed my hand and led me away.
I was nine.
