I Watched Them Die

Noah wasn't at school today.
And I keep asking mommy why.
But she looks at me and starts to cry,

Because she knows I watched him die.

I don’t play with Olivia anymore.
Her cubby is still empty next to mine.
Her mommy comes to our class sometimes.

She stands there and prays that Olivia is fine.

My new teacher makes this face.
I watch the water build up in his eyes.

He then looks at me and starts to cry.

Because he knows I watched them die.

Every Sunday I had a playdate with Chase.
And sometimes James tagged along too.
We’d go to the park and we’d swing on the swings.

But this past Sunday— I just sat alone and I drew.

My older sister Hannah is in middle school now.

She went to Sandy Hook ‘til last July.
Sometimes she looks at me and she starts to cry.

Because she knows I watched my friends die.

Everyone liked to tease me about Grace,

Cuz I would blush every time she spoke.

Once we even kissed on the playground.

Sometimes I think I miss Grace the most.

I don’t know where my friends are.
I never even got to say goodbye.
So now I just put my head down and cry.

Because I watched my best friends die.
