An Ordinary Evening- Inspired by "The Gift" by Li-Young Lee

The gravel,
A sheet of sandpaper,
Scraping against the thin pink skin
Of my frail palms
The blood,
Each drop a crimson tear
As I push myself from the gray earth
And run for the sure embrace of my mother
The trees,
How they blur into the soft watercolors
Of a race for sanctuary
My tears,
How they drip like silver rain
Upon the delicate fabric of my mother’s shirt
My smile,
Casting a golden beam
Through the silences,
As I bask in the love of an extraordinary woman
On an ordinary evening
