Opening Buck
Opening Buck
It was opening morning of the 2015 gun season,
My dad wakes me up at 4
And tells me to get up.
I get out of bed and put on my clothes,
then head down to the basement
where we get our guns and bags,
and eat a couple of donuts.
I think about how excited I am,
I am sure my sister thinks the same.
It is her first year hunting
and she is very excited.
This year is also a first for me,
My first year in my own stand.
We wait for my uncle to show up
So we can all go together.
At last he shows up
And now we head off.
In the pitch darkness
We get our heavy clothes on.
I walk up the road and into the woods,
Up the hill to my stand,
I sit, I wait.
I get cold very quickly
So I get out my phone to distract me from it.
I open up snapchat and start typing a message,
I look up.
He is walking towards me at an angle
I put down my phone saying “sh*t”,
I have no time to think about the fact
That I have never shot a buck,
No time to be nervous.
He is only 15 yards away.
I level my gun and fire,
He drops.
I did it.
