Wang Lung's Hunger
Tilling through clumps of earth,
Weathered stones and whitened bones
Sowing seed to search for water,
Desperate roots, ambitious shoots
Starving mouths besides my own,
Willowed chests and weakened throats
Shrinking stomachs that soften pain
Better, then, to seize to eat
