When I see you, I think of the color purple.
Maybe it’s because of that shirt you used to wear that was flickered with blues and purples.
And I don’t really know why.

When you speak to me, I see the color yellow surround you like a halo.
Like you were an angel sent from God himself.

And when you smile, I think of freshly cut grass on a hot summer day.
    Green and soft.
And I don’t really know why.

And when we talk, you remind me there is good in the world.
You prove that the world is a beautiful place full of wonder, full of joy, and full of color.

When I see the world, I think of you.
Because you showed me the rainbow.

Because there is color everywhere and rainbows are beautiful, and the world is so beautiful.

Like you, because you are so beautiful.

And you remind me of the sun because no matter how dark it gets at night, you continue to shine.

You continue to light the world because you are my best friend and I can’t imagine the world without the sun.

    Because you are a rainbow.

We became best friends because everyone needs a buddy in the land of misfit toys and you were there.

    Because you are a rainbow.

    You have always been there.
Just like how the sun is always there for the world.

You refuse to quit, you refuse to diminish.

    You are so beautiful.

And when I see you, I think of the future.
    And you are always there.

With your halo of yellow, and your smile of summer, and your face of blues and purples.

    You are always there.

    My best friend.
    My best friend.
    Oh how I love you.

Because you are my sun and I am your rainbow.

And I don’t really know why.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece when I was in 9th grade. It was inspired by my best friend at the time, but unfortunately we are no longer friends. But I think that just goes to show that that is how life is and despite the fact that we are no longer friends, I still care about her and this poem is still true.
