The Not-So-Silent Backseat Driver
The journey began like any other,
A familiar face occupied the passenger seat.
Our first trip together was supposed to be pleasurable,
little did I know that this was not the case.
The GPS was talking,
its robotic, unenthusiastic voice was tuned out by another.
“Turn left” was said before the technology had a chance,
“Pay attention” was ordered more than once.
But I stayed silent.
My hands focused on the wheel,
my foot steadily on the pedal.
I was told to turn right but I refused to listen.
I was yet again scolded,
but I stayed silent.
I drove and listened to the GPS,
as I was antagonized by the more persistent one next to me.
But I continued to stay silent.
The headache of a drive went on for so long,
We finally reached our destination after what felt like forever,
and it came clear that this backseat driver is now the new front seat driver for the journey home,
and I will not stay silent.

I was inspired to write this piece because I happen to be a backseat driver and I know how the driver feels when I make unwanted comments on their directions or driving.
