Secrets Tell No Lies Books Do
I’ve walked in the past
of civilization.
Through the ancient structures and pure history
observing symbols of knowledge and power.
Admiration had struck like thunder,
as I clapped my hands together
towards the cold withered stone shrine.
The serpent-like bird spoke back to me,
almost as if mimicking my own solemn spirit.
As I stood before the edge of morrow,
the golden spears were obscured behind the stone
and the darkness began to grow.
Once appraised and appeased by the clan,
only to be abandoned
and no sacrifices to be remembered.
Amidst a haunting cry,
The radiance of the gray hues above
snapped free in a swift soaring strike.
The lone beast had been forgotten,
its sorrowful howl remained in the past
unable to transcend its own fate.
Countless centuries have blown past,
only books and theories remain,
along descendants with no secrets to tell.

My trip to Merida, Yucatan and the vivid memories of spending time with my family and observing the Mayan ruins is what inspired me to write this poem.
