A Friend

He tries to speak, but no words come out
He tries to walk but his feet won’t form steps
He wants to play sports but can’t
He just wants to be like a teenage boy
One day, they let him go to school
He tries to say hello but his thoughts are trapped inside his head
“If I can’t say hello, I’ll show it” he thinks
As he crutches over enthusiastically, the students start to get scared
He is sad and hurt that people are afraid
He just wants to say hi, thought one
He wants to know someone cares
One day, he is fed up of no one understanding the thoughts inside his head
He screams and thrashes until the teachers are forced him to calm down
“He is scary” they think
“He doesn’t understand” they say
He does understand and one knows
He wants to be like the rest of them
He wants to have friends
One day, I look into his eyes and hold out my hand
He takes it and shakes it
There is a glimmer in his eye
“He is kind,” I think
He smiles to himself
he knows someone cares
He just found himself a friend

My coach has a special needs son and he is very sweet. He looks like he wants to be like the other kids and always tries to come say hi to us. Many of us, myself included will sometimes get nervous when he starts coming at us because he sometimes he will pull our hair or run at us when he is trying to say hello. He is misunderstood and just wants someone to be friends with. I can tell he has a good heart and I want him to know he has friends and people that care.
