The Freedom of The Younger
The idea of growing up is troubling to some
The thought of leaving the ages where-
The trouble was none
With the scuffed up sneakers
Traveling around
You could do anything
For others it is a time of joy
Where freedom is in reach
But the freedom can be restricted
With new responsibilities
The freedom of the younger is a sort where I could do anything
Like be a mermaid traveling port to port
Or even an actress, thriving in fame
Sometimes an author, showcasing my great novels
The rainy days where I could sit inside and pretend I was a princess
Trapped up in a tower
Or I would read fairy tales about dragons who reign
In kingdoms made of gold, where no flowers were the same
I was a connoisseur of the make-believe -
An expert in fables
And when I took charge of the story
I was like Little Red Riding Hood
Prancing from one tale to the next
The idea of leaving the ages where a bit of mud wouldn’t be out of place
And your scuffed-up sneakers seemed like ballet shoes
And if you walked carefully enough, you could walk amongst the stars
The idea of growing up is troubling to some
The thought of leaving the ages where-
The trouble was none
With the scuffed up sneakers
Traveling around
You could do anything
You could
Through daydream to book readings
And every fairy tale in between
The time of the younger
Can always be free
Though at times we yearn for the power and freedom of the elder
It seems better than the one we can see
And the ages new responsibilities seem so large
When the only problems you used to face were the small ones
The ones where your friend would cut you in line at recess
Within all that, the times of the younger can always be free
When you take a break from the angst, from the drowsy rain filled days
When you're working away
Just remember for this you do not have to pay, to get lost in a story
To daydream away
