The Journey to the Top
Thunder shook the trees on top of the mountains
The ground rumbling beneath us
The clouds soon turned black
A light switch in the sky
Miles away lightning illuminated the world
Musty rain poured down
Followed by hail,
Angrily plunging through the sky
Like marbles dropping on our heads.
Thousands of feet below us
Were families in their homes
Resting by a fire, sleeping to the sound of rain on the roof.
A two thousand foot climb was to come
As rivers of icy precipitation eroded the terrain
Creating waterfalls beneath our feet.

I visited Washington State and climbed Desolation Peak when I was 14 years old. During the hike, it began to hail. I wanted this poem to capture my experience.
